UEPLAC held a round table on Ukrainian Prison Health Policy and Harm Reduction Interventions, European Best Practices |
The Ukrainian-European Policy and Legal Advice Centre (UEPLAC) in cooperation with the State Department for Enforcement of Sentences, UNODC and with the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network held a round table on Ukrainian Prison Health Policy and Harm Reduction Interventions, European Best Practices, on 16-17 July 2007 in Pusha Vodytsa, “Dnipro” resort . .
The round table brought together some 50 practitioners, including experts and policy makers, the State Department, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Health, international organisations and Cooperation Agencies as well as NGOs working on the issue of HIV/AIDS prevention. During the Round Table discussions addressed key matters and international and European best practices relevant to HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis prevention in prison settings.
The participants shared the opinion that prison health is an integral part of public health, and that health problems in prisons are those of society. The dramatic challenges posed by the spread of HIV/AIDS in Ukraine and in the prison system in particular can only be won if all stakeholders work in close coordination and cooperation. This understanding was highlighted by stressing that such cooperation will provide immediate progress in the sphere of the harm reduction in prisons and will contribute to the reduction of HIV/AIDS (and other infections) in Ukraine in general. However, the subject should be tackled extremely carefully, given its nature.
